First official historical marker photographs, 1951.

Photographs showing the first historical marker to be erected under an official markers program operated by the Historical Society. Commemorating the Peshtigo fire of 1871, the marker is shown with Governor Walter Goodland, Society Director Clifford Lord, James R. Law, C. L. Harrington, and Russell Williams prior to its transport to Peshtigo.

An Office of Sites and Markers was established at the State Historical Society about 1954. It operated as a separate division until 1978 when supervision of the sites was turned over to the Museum Division (see WIHV86-A2049).
